Rebecca Kutler, president of MSNBC, has been diagnosed with breast cancer but has a good prognosis for recovery and expects to be away for only a few weeks, the network confirmed.
Kutler informed MSNBC staff of her diagnosis on the network’s editorial call Wednesday morning. She had previously shared the news with NBCUniversal and MSNBC executives as well as MSNBC’s top anchors.
Kutler, who has three children, urged her team to prioritise their health even amid an unprecedented news cycle, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter. The diagnosis was first reported by CNN.
Kutler, a CNN alum, was named president of MSNBC in February, succeeding Rashida Jones, who had led the network since 2021. She joined MSNBC as senior vice president of content strategy in 2022 after a long run at CNN, where she worked as an executive producer for Don Lemon and John King, among others.
MSNBC is undergoing major changes, including a spin-off into Versant, a company that will house most of NBCU’s cable TV networks, expected to be completed by the end of 2025. As part of the split, MSNBC will be renamed “MS NOW” (My Source for News Opinion and the World) and drop the peacock from its logo. Starting Oct. 6, NBC News will no longer appear on MSNBC, with full separation by Oct. 20.
