Singer Jessie J has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, just as she was preparing to release her first album in eight years. The 36-year-old, real name Jessica Cornish, discovered a lump before a Bafta appearance and underwent a mastectomy in early July.
In an interview, Cornish said she initially dismissed the lump after an ultrasound suggested it was nothing, but a biopsy on 28 March confirmed high-grade cancer cells. She described the diagnosis as 'not ideal' and 'not fucking great timing', adding that her first thought was for her toddler son.
The singer, known for hits like 'Price Tag', said she was lucky to avoid chemotherapy and radiotherapy, requiring only surgery. She described the mastectomy as 'terrifying and absurd', but noted she has kept her nipple. A second operation for reconstruction is pending.
Cornish's new album, 'Don't Tease Me With a Good Time', was intended as an open book about her struggles with endometriosis, miscarriage, and gaslighting. She kept her cancer secret while promoting the first single, 'No Secrets', in April, before going public in June.
Despite the ordeal, Cornish said the experience has made her more determined to live in the moment. She has cancelled tour dates due to the upcoming reconstructive surgery but remains positive, calling the cancer 'a shock' that has reinforced her priorities.
