Broadcaster James Whale has died at the age of 76 after moving into a hospice for terminal kidney cancer care. The radio and television personality, known for his decades-long career, first went public with his kidney cancer diagnosis in the early 2000s. He later revealed the disease had returned and spread to his spine and brain.
Throughout his illness, Whale became a passionate advocate for awareness, urging others to “listen to their bodies” and push for medical answers. He founded the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer, now merged with Kidney Cancer UK, to help others navigate the illness.
Health experts are now reminding the public to watch for warning signs of kidney cancer, as early diagnosis is vital. Key symptoms include blood in urine, which may appear pink, rusty, or brown; persistent pain on one side near the kidneys; unexplained fatigue or weight loss; low-grade fevers; and a lump or swelling around the kidneys.
Kidney cancer is more common in people over 60 and affects men more than women. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and family history of kidney disease. Whale was a long-time smoker, which he later discussed in relation to his diagnosis.
Each year, more than 13,000 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer in the UK. Survival rates have improved with early detection and new treatments, but awareness remains critical. Anyone noticing blood in their urine or other symptoms should book an appointment with their GP.
