Waitrose has issued an urgent recall for its Egg and Spinach Protein Pot after traces of salmonella were potentially detected. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced the recall on Tuesday, warning that the contaminated products are not safe to eat.
The recall applies to 90g snack pots with use-by dates between 31 July 2025 and 1 August 2025. Customers who have purchased these items are urged not to eat them and to return them to the store for a full refund. Waitrose has also placed recall posters in stores and notified staff.
In a statement, Waitrose apologised for the inconvenience caused. The FSA advises anyone showing symptoms of salmonella—such as fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps—to stay away from schools, workplaces, and nurseries until symptoms have resolved, to reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
This recall follows a similar one by Tesco for its pasta salads due to salmonella concerns. Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency shows a 17.1% rise in salmonella and Campylobacter infections in England between 2023 and 2024, reaching their highest level in over a decade. Health experts suggest the increase may be linked to reduced food standards and checks after Brexit.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection commonly associated with food poisoning from contaminated poultry, eggs, meat, raw produce, and unpasteurised dairy. Consumers are reminded to wash their hands thoroughly to reduce the spread of bacteria.
