Slimming World adds Subway wholegrain roll as Healthy Extra

Slimming World has updated its plan to include Subway's 6-inch wholegrain roll as a Healthy Extra, meaning followers can now enjoy a footlong sub without using their swips.

New Healthy Extra option

The weight loss organization has confirmed the roll as a new Healthy Extra fibre choice. This allows members to fill it with lean meat and vegetables while staying on plan. Previously, followers could only have salads or jacket potatoes from Subway if they wanted a zero-swip meal.

Healthy Extras are daily allowances that ensure sufficient fibre, calcium, vitamins and minerals. Members can choose three per day from items like milk, cheese, wholemeal bread and wholegrain cereals. Swips, formerly known as syns, are allocated for treats like mayonnaise, crisps and sweets.

Fans react with delight

Social media users have shared their excitement. Angie Baker, who goes by Slimmingworldwithange on Instagram, said: "Now this is a game changer!! I love the salads but who doesn't love the subs eh? I think the queues at Subway are about to get even longer."

SlimmingWorldwithSophie posted: "When out and about, Subway is on my list of Slimming World friendly eateries, so I’m super chuffed with the news that we now have the choice of salad, spud, OR SUB!!"

Slimming World with Lauren said she was "buzzing for this one", calling it "perfect for on the go lunches". Commenting on her post, Michelle pointed out: "So can u have a foot long as two healthy extras." Juliet added: "OMG this is amazing news, absolutely love subway, now more choices when wanting food on the go with family."

Nutritionist's perspective

Emily Young, Registered Nutritionist at Slimming World, said: "We regularly review and update our food database to ensure members following Slimming World's healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, have the most accurate and up to date information for foods they enjoy when out and about, as well as buy in the supermarket. As part of that process, we've confirmed Subway's 6-inch wholegrain roll, which provides a source of fibre, as a new Healthy Extra fibre choice and the response from members has been really positive!"

She added: "The excitement for this new fibre choice shows that people are actively looking for simple, accessible ways to include more fibre-rich foods in their day, even when eating out, and suggests our members understand the important role fibre plays as part of a healthy, balanced diet. In fact, our research shows Slimming World members consume around 10g more fibre than the UK population average."

Young noted that there are a range of wholemeal and wholegrain bread options for members to choose from, and the plan's flexibility allows for healthy eating at Subway and other restaurants. The update adds more choice and variety to the plan.
