Oven beats frying pan and air fryer for juiciest sausages, taste test reveals

A recent taste test has settled the debate over the best way to cook sausages, with the oven emerging as the clear winner for juiciness and flavour. Senior Lifestyle Reporter Angela Patrone compared three methods: frying pan, air fryer, and oven, to determine which produces the best results.

The frying pan method proved the worst, taking 25 to 30 minutes and resulting in unevenly cooked, charred sausages with a burnt flavour. The hob was left grease-splattered and the pan burnt, despite the sausages having a pleasant crispness.

The air fryer offered a quicker, hands-off approach: 23 minutes at 180°C produced golden, crispy sausages that were succulent and less oily, as fat drained into the basket. However, the oven method outperformed both.

Cooking sausages in a fan oven at 180°C for just over 30 minutes, turning halfway, yielded the most uniform browning and the juiciest interior. The skin was satisfyingly crisp without being tough, and clean-up was simple by discarding foil.

Patrone noted that while the oven is the most time-consuming method, it delivers the best flavour and texture. She concluded that the oven is now her preferred choice for cooking sausages.
