Why Oven-Baked French Toast Is Better
French toast is a delicious and easy breakfast, but frying it can be a hassle. Standing over a frying pan is time-consuming and often results in oil splattering across the kitchen. It also risks burning the outside while leaving the inside undercooked. However, Michelle, founder of Now Cook This, has revealed a simpler approach: cooking French toast in the oven.
Michelle said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!"
This method allows you to prepare a generous batch all at once without needing to watch it constantly. The oven ensures even cooking, producing a crispy texture without burning or leaving the centre raw. It also spares you from scrubbing a greasy hob or burnt pan.
Easy Oven French Toast Recipe
You will need:
- Eight slices of brioche bread
- Four large eggs
- 240ml of whole milk
- One teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
- Pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon)
- Butter (optional)
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Cooking spray
Simple Steps for Perfect Results
Begin by preheating the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7). Generously coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray.
Crack the eggs into a medium bowl, then add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir thoroughly until combined.
Pour the egg mixture into the tray, then arrange the bread slices in a single layer on top. Let the bread rest for one minute to absorb moisture, then flip each slice over. Leave for a few minutes until all the egg batter is absorbed. Transfer to the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is crispy and golden.
Serve immediately straight from the oven, drizzling with butter, maple syrup, or any other toppings of your choice.
