Monty Don's Daily 'Breakfast of Gods' Features Just Two Key Ingredients
Renowned gardener and BBC Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don has unveiled his preferred summer breakfast, a remarkably simple dish that he describes as a "breakfast of gods". The beloved horticultural expert, who resides at his peaceful Herefordshire home Longmeadow, starts each day with a nutritious meal that highlights fresh, homegrown produce.
A Peaceful Morning Routine at Longmeadow
Monty Don, aged 70, begins his mornings early, waking with the natural light. He kickstarts his metabolism with a pint of hot water from the Aga, a practice noted by health experts for benefits such as aiding digestion, reducing stress, and providing warmth. Following this, he spends half an hour practising outdoor yoga on the dew-covered lawn, a ritual that nourishes both mind and body before breakfast.
The Signature Breakfast: Stewed Rhubarb and Yoghurt
In an episode of his BBC One programme, Monty revealed his go-to breakfast: "I think rhubarb just lightly stewed with yoghurt, is a breakfast of gods". This two-ingredient meal combines tangy, succulent stewed rhubarb with a generous spoonful of smooth yoghurt, creating a delightful and easy-to-make dish. He emphasises the use of fresh ingredients, often sourced directly from his garden.
Additional Homegrown Breakfast Delights
Beyond rhubarb and yoghurt, Monty enjoys a varied morning menu. In a previous interview with The Times, he shared that he frequently has yoghurt with fruit from his garden and honey from his own bees. Alternatively, he might opt for eggs from his chickens, accompanied by homegrown chillies. A self-confessed marmalade enthusiast, he also enjoys gluten-free toast with orange preserve, noting that he and his wife Sarah avoid gluten due to her coeliac disease.
Post-Breakfast Activities and Coffee Break
After breakfast, Monty loves to potter around his expansive garden, which spans several acres. Like many, he takes a mid-morning break around 11am, especially on filming days for Gardeners' World, during which he savours his "single cup of coffee a day"—preferred large and strong. This routine underscores his balanced approach to daily life, blending gardening, nutrition, and simple pleasures.
