Homemade Sausage Rolls Challenge Greggs' Dominance
The humble sausage roll stands as Britain's beloved savoury snack, a staple in supermarkets and bakeries across the nation. For years, Greggs has reigned supreme with its iconic version, praised for its flaky pastry and succulent pork filling. However, a new contender has emerged from the world of social media, promising to dethrone this high street favourite.
TikTok Recipe Claims to Outdo Greggs
TikTok user @homewithrosiee, renowned for her from-scratch batch cooking, recently unveiled an "ultimate" sausage roll recipe that she claims surpasses even Greggs' offering. Intrigued by this bold assertion, we decided to put it to the test, preparing a batch of these homemade rolls to see if they could truly compete.
The recipe, which takes a mere twenty minutes from start to finish, incorporates caramelised onions into the sausage meat filling, a twist that proved to be a game-changer. Despite having to substitute white onions for red due to supermarket availability, the results were nothing short of spectacular. The filling remained utterly scrumptious, with the onions adding a depth of flavour that elevated the entire dish.
Simple Ingredients, Impressive Results
The ingredients list is refreshingly straightforward: puff pastry, eight hundred grams of Cumberland sausages, two onions, a teaspoon of brown sugar, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, and an egg for glazing. The method begins with caramelising the chopped onions in a frying pan, sprinkling in brown sugar halfway through to enhance their sweetness.
Once cooled, the onions are mixed with sausage meat extracted from its casings—arguably the fiddliest step—along with mustard, salt, and pepper. Using shop-bought pastry as a shortcut, the mixture is spread onto rolled-out pastry, rolled up, sealed, and cut into bite-sized pieces. After scoring and brushing with egg wash, the rolls are baked at one hundred eighty degrees Celsius fan for twenty minutes.
A Golden, Mouth-Watering Outcome
The finished sausage rolls emerged from the oven gloriously golden, with a delightfully flaky pastry encasing a mouth-watering filling. The caramelised onions truly stole the show, providing a rich, savoury sweetness that complemented the pork perfectly. Not only did these homemade versions give Greggs a run for their money, but they also offered a fresher, more customizable alternative that can be whipped up in no time.
This test demonstrates that with a simple recipe and a few key ingredients, home cooks can create sausage rolls that rival, and perhaps even exceed, the quality of high street giants. It's a testament to the power of homemade cooking and the delicious possibilities that lie just twenty minutes away in your own kitchen.
