Mashing a ripe banana into Greek yoghurt is a simple way to make it taste sweeter and creamier without resorting to honey or maple syrup, according to nutrition experts. The advice comes as a healthy alternative for those who find the taste of plain Greek yoghurt too bitter.
Healthy breakfast choice
Greek yoghurt is naturally high in protein and low in calories, making it a popular breakfast option for people with busy schedules. However, its sharp taste can be off-putting for some, and adding sugary toppings may undermine its health benefits.
Experts at Jennifer Hunt Nutrition note that while options like raw honey, agave, coconut sugar, and maple syrup can sweeten yoghurt, they are sources of calories and sugar with few nutritional benefits. They describe these as "empty calories."
Simple banana solution
The recommended method is to mash a ripe banana and stir it into the yoghurt. The experts explain that super ripe bananas are naturally sweet and mash easily, and they suggest using half a banana per serving, as a large banana counts as two fruit servings.
According to the experts, half a banana provides almost 20% of the daily requirement for vitamin B6, which is involved in protein metabolism, immune function, and cognitive development. This makes it a nutritious addition to breakfast.
Cinnamon as an alternative
For those without bananas, cinnamon is another natural sweetener that can be sprinkled on yoghurt. The experts say cinnamon may increase insulin sensitivity, helping with blood glucose control, and some studies suggest it could help fight inflammation and improve heart health.
While they caution that cinnamon is not a "magic cure," they recommend incorporating it into meals, particularly yoghurt, for flavour and a hint of sweetness.
