Slow Cooker Chicken Curry Recipe: Golden Raisins Add Sweetness, Not Sugar

If you are looking to reduce your weekly grocery expenses and cut back on costly restaurant meals and takeaways, there is an abundance of dishes you can prepare in your own kitchen. According to one recipe developer, the slow cooker is an absolute game-changer for creating delicious, budget-friendly meals.

Nate Anthony's Surprising Ingredient for Flavour

Recipe developer and TikTok sensation Nate Anthony, widely recognised as Bored of Lunch, has shared his version of a beloved takeaway curry. There is no need to spend money at your local curry house—simply place everything into the slow cooker and let it work its magic. Nate explained: "If there's one fakeaway you need to try, it's this slow cooker chicken curry and rice. Only six ingredients, made in your slow cooker, and even the rice cooks in the slow cooker."

Beyond all the conventional ingredients you would expect to find in a curry, Nate incorporates an unexpected element for added zest and fruitiness. His secret weapon? Golden raisins, as reported by the Express. Once the curry has been simmering nicely, Nate introduces the rice alongside the raisins, which he claims lend the dish a touch of sweetness. The raisins serve to balance out the warming and fragrant spices within the curry, providing a natural alternative to sugar.

However, Nate's decision to include golden raisins in the curry did not sit well with everyone. Ali said: "Ewww looks good without the raisins."

Here is how you can whip up Nate's curry at home for a fuss-free fakeaway feast.

Slow Cooker Chicken Curry & Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Chicken breasts, diced
  • Two to three tbsp curry paste of choice
  • One onion, finely diced
  • Fresh coriander
  • 300g White basmati rice
  • Golden raisins
  • Water or stock if you like
  • Salt & Pepper (optional)

Method:

  1. Pop all the ingredients into the slow cooker, excluding the raisins and rice. Pour in 100ml of water or stock and let it cook for three to four hours on high or seven to eight hours on low.
  2. Next, stir in the rice, raisins and between 800 to 900ml of water or chicken stock, and let it cook for another 45 minutes to an hour. If the rice has soaked up all the liquid after 45 minutes, add a splash more water to loosen it up.
  3. Finish off with a sprinkle of coriander and tuck in.

This recipe offers a simple, economical way to enjoy a homemade curry with a unique twist, perfect for busy households seeking to save money without sacrificing flavour.
