Microwave Hack for Perfect Fried Eggs Without a Pan, Says Expert

Cooking a fried egg typically requires a frying pan and careful attention, but an egg expert has revealed a microwave method that delivers the same result in under a minute. Tom Ferris, from chicken care website Roostys, says the technique is ideal for busy mornings or those without a cooker.

According to Ferris, the key is understanding how eggs react to microwave energy. 'You can make a perfect fried egg in the microwave. It looks, tastes, and even feels like a fried egg, but you don't need to use a hob or lots of oil, and it's ready in about 60 seconds,' he explained.

To try the hack, use a microwave-safe bowl or mug, a paper towel, one egg, and a tablespoon of cooking oil or butter. Swirl the oil to coat the bowl, crack in the egg, and pierce the yolk several times with a fork to prevent it from exploding. Season with salt and pepper, cover loosely with a paper towel, and microwave on full power for about one minute (or 45 seconds for powerful microwaves).

After cooking, let the egg stand for a minute to finish gently. 'It'll continue to cook gently while it's standing, and that's when it gets that nice texture - firm whites and a soft yolk,' Ferris said. The egg can then be lifted out with a spoon and placed directly onto toast.
