An expert has warned that three seemingly healthy lunch foods could be responsible for the afternoon slump and brain fog many people experience. Oliver Goble, deputy head of nutrition at food intolerance testing company Supply Life, said that even foods considered 'healthy' can cause inflammation and distress signals to the brain if the eater has an intolerance.
Dairy
Dairy products such as cheese sandwiches or yoghurt are common lunchtime choices, but for those with a dairy intolerance, they can cause problems. Goble explained: "For those with a dairy intolerance, the body will create antibodies against the protein in an attempt to rid it from the body, as a result, individuals can begin to experience uncomfortable symptoms such as excessive gas, bloating, and difficulty concentrating."
Bread
Bread may also be a culprit, particularly for those with a yeast intolerance. Goble noted that yeast intolerance reactions are not immediate and can appear several hours after eating, making it hard to link them to lunch. "Bloating, abdominal pain, and brain fog are all common, and most people never think to blame their bread," he said.
Protein bars
Protein bars are often seen as a convenient health food, but they can be packed with refined carbohydrates, dairy, and gluten. For anyone with a sensitivity to these ingredients, protein bars may do more harm than good. Goble recommends getting protein from whole foods such as eggs, chicken, or nuts, which come without additives.
