Renowned TV doctor Hilary Jones has issued a stark warning about Manuka honey, cautioning consumers that not all products labelled as 'Manuka' deliver the promised health benefits. The health expert has urged shoppers to be vigilant when purchasing this premium honey, which is often marketed as a natural remedy for various ailments.
What Makes Manuka Honey Special?
Manuka honey, sourced primarily from New Zealand, contains unique antibacterial properties due to its high methylglyoxal (MGO) content. This compound is believed to help with wound healing, sore throats, and even digestive issues. However, Dr Jones stresses that these benefits only apply to genuine, high-quality Manuka honey.
The Problem With Fake Manuka
"The market is flooded with products claiming to be Manuka honey when they're either diluted or completely fake," Dr Jones explains. "Many consumers are paying premium prices for what's essentially ordinary honey with a fancy label."
How to Spot Genuine Manuka Honey
Dr Jones recommends checking for these key indicators of quality:
- UMF or MGO rating: Look for certified ratings (UMF 10+ or MGO 100+) on the label
- Country of origin: Authentic Manuka comes from New Zealand
- Price: Real Manuka is expensive - if it's cheap, it's probably not genuine
- Texture and taste: Should be thick, creamy, and slightly medicinal
The health expert also warns against buying Manuka honey from unreliable sources or without proper certification. "When it comes to health products, it's always worth paying more for quality and authenticity," he adds.
