Clear whey protein powders offer a smooth, juice-like alternative to traditional thick and creamy shakes, making them a popular choice for post-workout hydration. Registered nutritionist Rob Hobson explains that the intensive filtration process removes components responsible for creaminess, resulting in a purer product with potentially higher protein per gram.
German brand ESN's clear whey powder impressed with its faultlessly smooth texture and natural-tasting blackberry flavour, providing 24g of protein per 104-calorie serving. It is free from lactose, sugar, and fat, with only 0.7g of carbs.
Protein Works offers a tasty and affordable option, with blue raspberry and orange mango flavours that resemble juice. Each serving contains 86 calories, 20g of protein, and added vitamins B6 and B12, plus ingredients like Acetyl L Carnitine and green tea extract. However, it requires thorough shaking to avoid lumps.
Myprotein, which introduced clear whey to the mainstream in 2019, delivers 20g of protein per serving with a relatively short ingredients list, using natural flavourings in fruit-based flavours. Some flavours may be overly sweet, but the Vimto collaboration was particularly well-received.
