Slim Chickens, a fast-food restaurant in Cardiff's St David's Shopping Centre, has been handed a zero food hygiene rating following a recent inspection. The rating indicates that "urgent improvement is necessary" at the establishment.
Inspection details and closure
The US chain, known for its chicken tenders and sauces, was inspected on June 29. A week later, the restaurant suddenly closed, with no immediate explanation. A spokesperson later confirmed the branch was closed for refurbishment and reopened the following week.
Food Standards Agency findings
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website, "major improvement is necessary" in the management of food safety and the cleanliness and condition of facilities. Improvement is also required in the area of hygienic food handling.
The FSA defines hygienic food handling as the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage of food. Cleanliness and condition refer to the layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities, and pest control. Management of food safety involves systems ensuring food is safe to eat, staff knowledge, and confidence in maintaining standards.
Background and expansion
The Cardiff branch was Slim Chickens' first in Wales, opening in 2018. A previous inspection in November 2020 earned a rating of five. The franchise owner, Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG), was approached for comment. Slim Chickens has since expanded to Bridgend and Swansea.
