Cardiologist Reveals Avocado as Superfood to Lower Cholesterol
Avocado Superfood Lowers Cholesterol: Cardiologist

Dr Oliver Guttmann, a consultant cardiologist at The Wellington Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, has identified avocados as a key superfood for lowering cholesterol. The recommendation comes as part of broader dietary advice to reduce saturated fats and increase intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Why Avocados Are Effective

According to the British Heart Foundation, avocados are rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre, and healthy unsaturated fats. They fit well into heart-healthy diets such as the Mediterranean and DASH diets. Their creamy texture makes them a good substitute for foods like cheese, butter, and fatty meats that are high in unhealthy fats.

Dr Guttmann explains: “Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in your blood that is essential for building cells and producing certain hormones.” He distinguishes between low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, which can lead to plaque build-up in arteries, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol, which helps remove LDL from the bloodstream.

How to Incorporate Avocados

Avocados can be easily added to meals, such as on toast, in sandwiches, fajitas, or burritos. The NHS advises people to eat less fatty food, especially those high in saturated fat, to lower cholesterol. Dr Guttmann recommends focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while reducing intake of saturated and trans fats found in fatty meats, fried foods, and processed snacks. He suggests opting for healthy fats like those in avocados, nuts, and olive oil.

Impact on Heart Health

High cholesterol occurs when there is too much of the fatty substance in the blood, increasing the risk of heart disease. By incorporating avocados and other healthy fats, individuals can improve their cholesterol levels and overall heart health.
