For those seeking warmth and nostalgia during the chilly post-festive season, a viral TikTok recipe is offering a simple yet comforting dish: eggs in a cup. The three-ingredient creation, shared by user @cocolarkincooks, has struck a chord with viewers who remember the dish from childhood.
In her video, Coco explained that she first encountered the dish at a local French bakery during her younger years, but has rarely seen it since. She described the preparation as an overlooked method for cooking eggs, admitting she "can't stop making them". The recipe requires just eggs, bread and butter.
To make the dish, Coco advises boiling three eggs and setting a timer for six and a half minutes, before transferring them to an ice bath. Meanwhile, a slice of bread is toasted and generously buttered, with Coco recommending "good butter" for the best flavour, as "when you're using just three ingredients, use the best".
Once the eggs are peeled, they are placed in a cup and seasoned with salt and pepper before being mashed together until gooey. The result, according to Coco, is a "perfectly runny centre" and the optimal way to eat it is by scooping the mixture onto the buttered toast. She declared: "Eggs in a cup are the best things ever."
Commenters were quick to share their own connections to the dish. One noted that in Ireland it is known as "guggy egg", while another fondly recalled their father making it before school. A third suggested adding extra butter to the warm eggs for a more indulgent version.
