The second season of ‘Common Side Effects’ was unveiled at the Annecy Animation Festival, with its creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely presenting the first footage alongside director Camille Bozec and executive producer Benjy Brooke. The panel discussed an expanded narrative and aesthetic scope, including new characters, environments, and a darker tone.
The new clip, taken from the season two premiere, picks up immediately after the season one finale. Marshall and Frances hike in Joshua Tree while DEA Agent Harrington pursues them on a motorcycle. After a tense standoff, the pair travel to Oregon, with the scene set to Roy Orbison’s ‘Blue Angel’.
Brooke described the shift in tone, comparing the first season to ‘The Big Lebowski’ meets ‘Michael Clayton’ and the follow-up to ‘The Insider’ meets ‘Indiana Jones’. The series remains a thriller, with season two exploring new kinds of tension as the characters try to stay hidden and decide whom to trust.
A new antagonist, Thomas, voiced by Bob Stephenson, is introduced. He has a prior relationship with the Blue Angel mushroom and treats it with religious obsession. His design was partially inspired by actor Dave Bautista, featuring a furrowed brow and thick hands. A new ally, Eutychus (voiced by Matthew Maher), is a bookstore owner with a ‘System of a Down beard’.
The season moves to the Pacific Northwest, where foggy, dilapidated settings create a spooky, paranoid atmosphere. The metaphysical ‘Portal’ space is expanded, offering dreamlike environments tailored to each character who ingests the Blue Angel. Bennett hinted at further exploration of this surreal realm in the new season.
