A UK-based vet has revealed the surprising reason why cats often snub their indoor water bowls in favour of drinking outside. The explanation lies in their instinctive behaviour to avoid contamination.
In a TikTok video, the vet, known as Cat, explained that cats are hardwired to avoid drinking water near their food. This stems from their wild ancestors, who would catch prey such as mice and rats. These animals often contaminate nearby water sources with their waste, and drinking such water could make cats ill.
Cat advised that placing food and water bowls together, even on the same mat, is ineffective. She recommended keeping them well apart, such as on opposite sides of the room or in different rooms entirely. This also explains why cats often prefer drinking from dripping taps or showers, as moving water is less likely to be contaminated.
