Unpaid Carers Urged to Inform GPs for Better Health Support
Unpaid Carers: Tell Your GP for Better Health Support

Approximately 5.8 million individuals across the UK undertake the responsibility of caring for another person without it being part of their formal employment. These unpaid carers may be eligible for various forms of government assistance, including Carer’s Allowance. Dr Kasim Ahmed, appearing on BBC’s Morning Live on May 28, emphasised the importance of informing general practitioners (GPs) about one’s caring role.

Why Tell Your GP?

Dr Kas stated: “It’s really important if you are in this kind of unpaid carer role; first, recognising that you’re in that role and letting someone know that you’re in that role, ideally your GP.” He acknowledged that many might question what a GP can do, but emphasised that documentation is key. Once a carer informs their GP, this information is added to their medical record, enabling the GP to signpost them to appropriate support.

Access to Specialist Referrals

GPs can refer carers to specialists such as physiotherapists, continence advisers, and dieticians, offering more targeted assistance than primary care alone. Dr Kas explained: “If you’re having trouble with your physical health, they’ve got that little marker in the back of the head that you need to check in on this person every so often.” This awareness helps doctors better understand ailments, as caring can take a physical, mental, and emotional toll.

Respite Care and Additional Benefits

For those needing a break from caring, the GP can be the first point of contact to find out about available respite care and how to arrange it. Carers UK notes that GPs in England are encouraged to adopt measures ensuring young carers receive flu vaccinations, regular health check-ups, and mental health screening. If both the carer and the person they care for are registered at the same surgery, double appointments may be available, allowing them to be seen together.

GPs can also provide supporting letters and documentation to prove a carer’s role, which can facilitate access to benefits and other support. Carers UK offers a downloadable letter template to help carers inform their GP and register their role on medical records. More information and support are available on the Carers UK website.
