Bailey Vanden Bossche, aged 14, and her companion Zoey Bark were navigating the Wendy Trail in Newbury Park at approximately 5:30 p.m. on March 20 when the incident unfolded.
Trailside Mishap Leads to Snake Encounter
According to reports from the Ventura County Star, Bailey attempted to walk her bicycle through a narrow, uneven section of the path but lost her footing and slipped. She tumbled into dense brush, with her bike landing on top of her. Upon getting up, she inadvertently stepped on the snake, as recounted by her mother, Brooke Cushman.
Initially, Bailey and Zoey believed she had merely suffered a broken ankle, noting only a single puncture wound was visible. "I got up, my ankle was bleeding, but I didn't feel a bite," Bailey later told CBS Los Angeles. However, symptoms rapidly escalated. "My face started tingling and then my hearing went out and I like couldn't – my body just didn't feel good," she described.
Remote Location Complicates Rescue Efforts
Stranded several miles from home as Bailey's condition deteriorated, the girls decided to call her father, who resided nearby. Zoey expressed fear during the ordeal, stating, "It was scary because we were by ourselves and her phone was like, her dad couldn't track her location, so I was scared that he couldn't find us."
Her father eventually located them, and upon removing Bailey's shoe, discovered her ankle had swollen to the size of a golf ball. She had lost mobility, prompting an immediate 911 call. By the time firefighters arrived, Bailey was experiencing breathing difficulties.
Bryan Vanden Bossche, Bailey's grandfather, vividly recalled the scene: "You could see her face distorted and the muscles going in different ways. So it was a very scary moment."

First responders acted quickly, administering medication to slow the venom's reaction and transporting Bailey on a specialised stretcher designed for remote rescues. Her mother, Brooke Cushman, was shocked to learn from emergency personnel that rattlesnake bites can be fatal. "That hit me like a train," she said.
Bailey spent five days in hospital, followed by a series of medical visits including a paediatrician appointment, a return to the emergency room to rule out blood clots, and urgent care for a rash on her foot. Her grandfather, a former firefighter with three decades of experience, explained complications with anti-venom treatments, such as allergic reactions or blood clotting issues.
