Every year, over a million people travel to Istanbul for hair transplants, drawn by high-quality procedures and competitive costs. The city has become the global capital of hair restoration, with clinics offering packages that can cost under €3,000 compared to €6,000–€15,000 in Europe or the US.
James McElroy, who had a transplant in Istanbul a year ago, says: 'I used to look at my father and understand that I was destined to go bald. I had a few doubts at the beginning, but today I’m happy and satisfied.' He adds that he is open about his procedure and appreciates the compliments he receives.
The boom began about a decade ago with the shift from painful strip grafts to minimally invasive implantation techniques. Clinics now use a special pen with a hollow needle to implant thousands of follicles in a half-day operation. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have been key in advertising 'all-inclusive' packages.
Mathew Powell, 44, from Wales, found his clinic on Instagram. 'Until about 35 I had plenty of hair, but then I started losing it quickly and I got deeply discouraged. I absolutely had to do something,' he says. He has had two transplants and is very satisfied.
Not all clinics are reputable; Dr Ahmed Yüksel of Micro Fue Turkey warns of 'illegal basement operations'. He chose not to have a transplant himself but finds satisfaction in helping others feel younger and more confident. Patients like Allan Nuttall, 31, from Leyland, England, report natural-looking results: 'The barber admitted that if I hadn’t told him, he wouldn’t have noticed my new transplanted hair.'
