Schoolgirl Described as 'Too Beautiful for This World' Found Dead After Futility Comments
An inquest has heard the tragic details surrounding the death of a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was described by loved ones as 'far too beautiful for this ugly world'. Skye Read was found deceased in her bedroom the day after she made comments about 'the futility of life', Suffolk Coroner's Court in Ipswich was told.
Discovery and Immediate Response
Skye Read took her own life on November 29 last year at her family home in Kirkley Rise, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Her mother, Nicky Read, discovered her at 4.45pm upon returning from work. Paramedics were summoned immediately, but despite their efforts, Skye was declared dead at the scene. Family and friends remembered her as 'a little angel' and 'forever young'.
Coroner's Findings and Conclusion
Suffolk area coroner Darren Stewart OBE presided over a brief hearing, outlining the findings of an earlier written inquest conducted by assistant coroner Kate Anderson. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death was hanging from a ligature.
Mr Stewart stated: 'There was no history of mental health issues or any thoughts of harming herself. She made comments on the evening before about the futility of life but nothing to indicate she would take her own life.' The coroner recorded a conclusion of suicide, noting it was based on 'a deliberate act' with the intent to end her life.
Community Outpouring and Tributes
A GoFundMe appeal established by a family friend to assist with funeral expenses highlighted Skye's character, describing her as 'the most caring, funny, cleverest girl' whose soul was 'far too beautiful for this ugly world'. The appeal, aiming to give Skye 'the most fantastic send off', garnered 375 donations and raised over £7,000, reflecting the deep impact she had on her community.
Suffolk Constabulary confirmed the death was not treated as suspicious, and the East of England Ambulance Service noted that she died at the scene 'despite the best efforts of all involved'.
School and Family Reactions
Skye was a Year 10 pupil at East Point Academy in Lowestoft, part of the Inspiration Trust. The school's principal at the time, Pete Seadon, communicated her 'tragic passing' to parents, expressing that 'We are all deeply affected by this loss'.
Ahead of Skye's funeral at Waveney Memorial Park and Crematorium in Ellough on January 6 this year, her mother Nicky Read paid a heartfelt tribute: 'To my darling Skye, my shining star, my special gift from the heavens xx I will miss you every moment of every day and will until we meet again, love you always SkyeStar.'
The inquest underscores the sudden and devastating nature of Skye's death, occurring without prior mental health indications, leaving her family, friends, and school community in profound grief.
