Dame Prue Leith, the 85-year-old judge on The Great British Bake Off, has revealed she tried weight loss injections for two months, despite previously calling them a waste of money. In a conversation with The Sunday Times, she admitted to using the drugs but said they had little effect on her weight.
Leith said she lost her appetite completely but did not shed a single ounce. She described feeling tired all the time and said she ‘hated’ the experience. Her husband, John Playfair, commented that she ‘looked thinner’, which she interpreted as ‘old and scraggy round the face.’
While Leith’s experience was negative, her husband lost two stone on Mounjaro. However, she lamented that he now hardly drinks, whereas she enjoys two or three glasses of wine a night. ‘He hardly drinks now, and I’m a great boozer,’ she said.
Leith had previously criticised weight loss jabs at The Times Health Commission in February 2023, stating they ‘take the joy out of life’ and should only be used by those in desperate need. She also noted the high cost of the medication.
The drugs, including Ozempic and Mounjaro, have become increasingly popular, with celebrities like Serena Williams and Sharon Osborne using them. Leith’s husband, a retired clothing designer, married her in 2016 when she was 76.
Leith recently announced she is reducing her Bake Off commitments, stepping back from the celebrity version to pursue other interests. She cited her age and a desire to travel as reasons for the change.
