Parents Alerted to 'Rochdale's Chernobyl' Asbestos Hazard at Abandoned Factory Site

A stark warning has been issued to parents and carers in Rochdale regarding a derelict industrial site ominously nicknamed 'Rochdale's Chernobyl'. The sprawling former Turner Brothers Asbestos factory, closed since the 1990s, is believed to still harbour dangerous asbestos fibres, posing severe health risks to trespassers.

Surge in Trespassing Incidents Puts Children at Risk

According to the site owners, Spodden Park Ltd, trespassing has escalated alarmingly, with over 100 incidents recorded in October 2025 alone. On average, there are between 30 to 60 breaches monthly, spiking by up to 25% during school holidays as groups, including so-called urban explorers and regular trespassers, force entry.

The company reports that reinforced security measures, such as hardened steel chains and locks, have been repeatedly compromised. Visible fence damage and even a smashed CCTV camera have been noted during inspections, undermining efforts to secure the hazardous location.

Deadly Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos, once prized for its heat and fire resistance, is now known to be highly perilous. Its microscopic fibres can become lodged in the lungs for life, leading to devastating illnesses like asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. The owners emphasise that even brief exposure inside the decaying buildings could result in fibres clinging to clothing, potentially endangering others long after leaving the site.

Beyond asbestos, the deteriorating structures pose additional threats, including risk of collapse and difficult access for emergency services if someone becomes trapped. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing fly-tipping and urban explorers filming their entries, with videos shared on platforms like YouTube.

Legal Action and Community Appeals

Spodden Park Ltd has warned it may pursue legal action if trespassing persists. They are urging parents and carers to discuss the dangers with children, using a safety factsheet on asbestos exposure and derelict buildings. Witnesses are encouraged to report incidents to police to help curb the risky behaviour.

Historical Context and Redevelopment Challenges

The Turner Brothers factory was once a major employer in Rochdale before its closure. Since then, the site has become a long-running contamination and redevelopment challenge. Early plans in 2004 for 650 homes, a daycare centre, and business park were rejected by Rochdale Council in 2011. A later attempt in 2021 by ESG Trading Ltd also failed after £500,000 contamination investigations were not completed by landowner MMC Estates.

In 2014, a fire tore through part of the abandoned factory, further damaging an already hazardous landscape. This history underscores the persistent dangers and complexities associated with the site, reinforcing the urgent need for public awareness and caution.
