Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has undergone major surgery this week, the Norwegian Palace has announced. The wife of Crown Prince Haakon, who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, has had a successful lung transplant.
The 53-year-old underwent the procedure at Oslo National Hospital, a statement confirmed on Wednesday. The surgery was undertaken successfully, according to palace officials.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic lung disease that causes scarring of lung tissue, leading to breathing difficulties. The princess has been managing the condition since her diagnosis seven years ago.
The royal family has requested privacy during her recovery period. Further updates are expected in due course.
