NHS England has issued a critical warning regarding the decline in immunity against Covid-19, emphasising the urgent need for eligible individuals to secure their spring vaccinations. Officials have highlighted that previous immunity from earlier jabs or infections can diminish over time, posing increased risks to vulnerable populations.
Eligibility and Booking Details
The spring vaccination programme is now open to millions of people across England, specifically targeting those aged 75 and over, residents of care homes, and individuals with weakened immune systems. NHS England has confirmed that these patients will receive invitations, but they are encouraged not to wait and to book appointments proactively.
To facilitate access, tens of thousands of daily slots are available at various locations, including GP practices and community pharmacies. Booking can be done conveniently through multiple channels: using the NHS app, visiting the NHS website, calling 119, or attending walk-in sites without prior arrangement.
Official Statements and Health Risks
Caroline Temmink, director of vaccination at NHS England, stressed the ongoing threat of Covid-19, noting that the virus circulates year-round and remains particularly dangerous for older and vulnerable individuals. She remarked, "With us all experiencing lighter and warmer days, it can be harder to imagine getting sick from viruses like Covid-19, but they do circulate all year and can be just as dangerous for those who are vulnerable."
She further explained, "Previous immunity can wane over time, so we are encouraging all those who are eligible to come forward as soon as possible to get protected. You do not need to wait for an invite to book if you're eligible – just visit the NHS website, use the NHS App or call 119 to get an appointment in your diary."
This warning comes amid concerns about new Covid variants, such as one spreading in the US that could potentially evade current vaccines, underscoring the importance of maintaining up-to-date protection through regular vaccinations.
