Sunderland's new specialist eye hospital is now fully open in the city centre. The Sunderland Specialist Eye Infirmary completed a phased opening over the past fortnight, and consultant and clinical director Dr Ajay Kotagiri said the feedback has been amazing.
Futureproofing Eyecare in Sunderland
Dr Kotagiri said the new hospital would "futureproof" the city's reputation as a leading centre for eyecare, which dates back to the 19th century. He said: "It's a great feeling, having been involved throughout the setting up and planning of this hospital, as all of our staff have been. Now, to see the full hospital all working in reality, it's amazing. The initial feedback has been encouraging from all of our patients."
Improved Patient Experience
The old eye infirmary was described as "old and creaky" with small waiting areas and poor patient flow. It was difficult for people with visual impairments to navigate. Dr Kotagiri said: "That is much improved in the new hospital. Patients are noticing huge differences in their comfort!"
Central Location Benefits
The new hospital on Plater Way, next to Sunderland City Hall, is more accessible. Dr Kotagiri said: "We do accept patients from across the North East and it was harder to reach the old infirmary. If you were coming from Hartlepool or South Tyneside you might need to take change buses twice. Being in the city centre and close to the Metro and trains is much easier."

Dr Kotagiri added: "This is an incredibly exciting moment for our patients, our staff and everyone connected with our eye care services. Sunderland Eye Infirmary has cared for generations of people. It will always hold a special place in our history. However, Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital gives us a modern environment equipped with the latest technology. It will allow us to deliver outstanding care now and for many years to come."
The hospital is part of the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Trust. Trust chief executive Ken Bremner said: "It is a tremendous achievement by everyone involved in getting us to this day. I want to thank everyone who has played a part in planning and building this fantastic facility. It is a very proud moment in our history and will see us offer eye care for Sunderland and our region for many decades to come."
