Mum's Heartbreaking Battle to Diagnose Toddler's Painful Mystery Illness
A tormented mother from Stockport has revealed her desperate search for answers as her two-year-old daughter battles a painful mystery illness that leaves bedsheets soaked in blood each night. The exhausted parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, described watching her little girl suffer as "absolutely heartbreaking" at such a young age.
A Lifetime of Health Struggles
The toddler's medical problems began when she was just ten days old, requiring hospitalization for three weeks with breathing issues that necessitated a CPAP machine. Despite antibiotic treatment, she showed minimal improvement during those critical early weeks of life.
In her short two years, the girl has endured multiple serious health challenges including:
- Two bouts of hand, foot and mouth disease
- Repeated episodes of bronchiolitis
- Severe eczema and asthma requiring regular inhalers
- Allergic reactions to numerous everyday foods including fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, oats, soya, gluten and dairy
The mother explained that these food allergies have left her daughter with extremely limited dietary options, compounding her daily struggles.
Medical Frustrations and Escalating Treatments
The mother expressed frustration that her daughter's symptoms were "frequently dismissed as viral" by doctors, despite multiple antibiotic prescriptions. She recalled one particularly distressing encounter where a medical professional asked if she was a first-time mother, making her feel her concerns weren't being taken seriously.
After the girl's first vaccinations, a rash developed that doctors initially attributed to a milk allergy. Despite prescription medications including piriton and specialized milk, her skin continued to deteriorate with constant itching.
Medical interventions escalated through increasingly potent treatments:
- Initial hydrocortisone applications
- Stronger steroid creams including dermavate and protopic
- Alternative treatments like Oilatum and oat baths
Sadly, these treatments provided no relief and some, including the oat baths, actually worsened her condition. The steroid treatments eventually led to steroid withdrawal, causing her skin to "worsen much more and weep."
Nightly Trauma and Desperate Measures
The mother described the nightly ordeal: "There's been many times our bedding is full of blood. I have spent countless nights rubbing her skin just so she can get some sleep."
During the day, the toddler often sleeps excessively from exhaustion, yet still requires skin rubbing to find rest. The family has tried numerous preventative measures including sleep sleeves and a Scratch Star device, but the girl continues scratching even with mitts on, sometimes using household objects to relieve the intense itch.
When doctors recommended methotrexate - a powerful immunosuppressant typically used for severe psoriasis - at just one year old, the mother initially agreed but then reconsidered due to concerns about her daughter's already compromised immune system.
Lifestyle Changes and Difficult Conversations
Determined to address root causes rather than just symptoms, the mother implemented sweeping lifestyle modifications:
- Complete dietary changes
- Installation of bath filters and humidifiers
- Introduction of probiotics
- Switch to natural cleaning products
- Various detox attempts
Despite these efforts, her daughter's condition showed no improvement. The mother faced difficult conversations with medical professionals who emphasized that refusing prescribed medications could be considered neglectful, even while acknowledging she was doing "an incredible job" as a parent.
"As a mother, it's incredibly distressing," she shared. "Making these decisions is extremely difficult. If my daughter, at just two years old, could understand and be asked whether she wants repeated blood tests or oral steroids, I believe she would say no."
Seeking Private Solutions Amid Personal Struggles
When the mother inquired about gut health connections to eczema, she claims doctors bluntly dismissed the possibility. With her daughter now two and still in constant pain, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign to fund private specialist consultation, hoping to move beyond symptom management alone.
The family's challenges extend beyond medical concerns. They moved into a new build home with laminate flooring to reduce environmental triggers, but saw no improvement. The mother lost her job at a place where she "truly believed I'd be for life" and felt abandoned by her support network when she needed them most.
Adding to their distress, after sharing their story publicly, both her and her neighbor's cars were mysteriously targeted with smashed windows.
"Everything has felt like one thing after another," the mother said, "but I will continue to do everything I can for my daughter."
The family currently parks in disabled bays while awaiting a disability badge, as the nearest available parking requires a fifteen-minute walk - a challenging distance for hospital visits, particularly at night, with a child who often struggles to walk due to her skin condition.
Reflecting on her journey, the mother added: "I honestly believe I was ignorant to eczema, allergies, and asthma before all of this. But the truth is, unless you go through it yourself or witness someone you love living in that pain every single day, you can never truly understand how much it affects every part of life."
