Mum Saves £500 a Month, Loses 5st by Ditching Takeaways

Mum's Takeaway Habit Cost £500 Monthly Before Life-Changing Swap

A mother from Brecon has shared her inspiring journey of reclaiming self-confidence and slashing her food bills by over £100 a week after abandoning a costly takeaway routine. Whitley Lloyd, aged 34, turned to food for comfort following the loss of her grandmother at 24, relying on up to four takeaways each week at approximately £30 per order.

"I didn't realise how much it all added up," Whitley admits. "Looking back now, it's shocking to think about how much money I was spending." The pivotal moment came when she saw a photograph of herself at a family party, prompting her to join a local Slimming World group. This decision led to rapid financial and physical benefits, with Whitley reporting increased energy and improved health.

From Takeaways to 'Fakeaways': A Culinary Revolution

Since enrolling in Slimming World, Whitley has replaced late-night takeaways with homemade "fakeaways" and developed a passion for cooking from scratch. "When I think I was spending up to £500 a month on takeaways and now, I'm not only saving money – I've only had four takeaways this year – I'm also proud of the fantastic healthy meals I can cook," she explains.

Her story aligns with a recent UK-wide poll that exposes the nation's fast-food spending habits. The survey found that 60% of people spend up to £50 weekly on takeaways and high-fat convenience foods, while 29% allocate over £100 monthly to frozen items like nuggets and chips. Notably, 47% believe significant savings could be achieved by cutting back, yet 20% lack confidence in cooking from scratch.

Weight Loss Milestones and Financial Freedom

Whitley, who stands 5ft 3in, started her journey at 15st 9lbs and has since lost an impressive 5st, dropping from a size 18 to a size 10. "That first week I threw myself into the healthy eating plan and I lost 5lbs. It was a huge moment for me. For the first time, I realised losing weight was possible!" she recalls.

With guidance from her Consultant Jo and fellow group members, Whitley mastered preparing filling, budget-conscious meals. "Jo's shown me the key to lasting weight loss is being consistent. Things like thinking ahead and planning my meals for the week – having those 'go‑to' recipes ready stopped me reaching for takeaways and I started enjoying my food more," she says.

Broader Implications and Expert Insights

Slimming World's member survey of over 1,500 individuals, with 77% having shed over a stone, highlights substantial financial advantages. Before joining, 88% spent up to £100 weekly on takeaways and convenience foods; post-joining, 39% eliminated these purchases entirely, potentially saving households over £5,000 annually.

Alex Clark, a Registered Nutritionist at Slimming World, comments: "Whitley's story captures exactly what we're seeing in our research. So many of us are juggling busy lives and tight budgets so it's completely understandable that convenience foods and takeaways can feel like the easiest option." He adds that cooking from scratch can be just as convenient, more fulfilling, and significantly cheaper.

Jo Thomas, who runs the Brecon Slimming World group, expresses pride in Whitley's transformation: "The confidence she has now, the joy she brings into group, the way she's taken control of her life and reduced her spending – it's honestly inspiring." She notes that joining a Slimming World group offers a year of support for roughly the cost of one month of weight-loss injections, proving that real change need not be expensive.

Whitley concludes: "I'm happier, healthier and truly myself again. Slimming World didn't just help me lose weight – it gave me back my spark, my confidence and control of my finances."
