A 66-year-old mother died after collapsing at her GP surgery in Llanyravon, Wales, following days of waiting for an appointment, an inquest has heard. Jacqueline Watkins had been feeling unwell and contacted Llanyravon Surgery earlier that week, but the earliest available appointment was on Thursday, June 18, at 3pm.
Upon arriving for the appointment, she collapsed while sitting in a chair in the waiting room. Despite desperate efforts by medical staff to save her, she was pronounced dead at the surgery. Her family has raised concerns about the care and advice she received, stating there were 'missed opportunities' and that they want a full investigation.
An inquest into her death was opened at Gwent Coroners' Court on Tuesday. Area coroner Rose Farmer confirmed a post-mortem examination had been carried out, but no medical cause of death was given during the brief hearing. A full inquest is scheduled for March next year.
Her daughter, Donna Evans, paid tribute to her mother in an emotional Facebook post, describing the family as 'utterly devastated' and having 'many unanswered questions about the advice and care given this week.' Friends also expressed shock and sadness, with one noting that Mrs Watkins had mentioned feeling unwell that morning.
