Olivia Munn Reveals How John Mulaney's Dark Humour Supported Her Cancer Journey
Comedian John Mulaney employed what his wife Olivia Munn describes as "inappropriate cancer jokes" to help her through her challenging two-year battle against bilateral breast cancer. The actress, now cancer-free at 45, opened up about this unconventional coping mechanism during a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning.
Finding Lightness in Dark Times
"We've made a lot of inappropriate cancer jokes that we could never tell publicly because it just lightened the mood," Munn explained. "It just made it not so scary. It really helped change my mind at times, you know? Sometimes when I was really scared, we'd talk about it and we'd really get into all of the fears and his fears and then there'd be like a lull and then he would make a joke. And it would just all feel not so scary at that time. He's the best."
Munn underwent five significant surgeries between 2023 and 2024, including a lymph node dissection, a double mastectomy, an ovariectomy, and a partial hysterectomy. Throughout this intensive medical journey, Mulaney demonstrated unwavering support by attending every doctor's appointment and even taking detailed notes about cancer treatments and hormone therapy in the same notebook he typically uses for comedy material.
A Partnership Forged Through Adversity
"There's no better person in the world to me than my husband," the actress gushed. "He wanted to come to every single doctor's appointment. He's just the most fun, nice person in the world. He was there. And having the humor to go through it and having someone who's so funny, it just lightens everything."
The couple, who met at Seth Meyer's 2013 wedding, have been married for 20 months and are parents to three-year-old son Malcolm Hiệp and 18-month-old daughter Méi June, who was born via surrogate. Munn reflected on how her perspective changed during her health crisis: "I feel that this was always going to be my life. This is what life is made of. It's all these tiny little moments. And once you are faced with the possibility of death and not being here, it's for me all I wanted were the little moments. They're the best."
Supporting Each Other's Recovery Journeys
Munn has also played a supportive role in Mulaney's recovery from substance abuse, administering random drug tests to ensure he remains on track following his 2020 rehabilitation for alcohol, cocaine, and prescription pill addiction. Their relationship began in February 2021 when they reconnected "at church in LA," while Mulaney was still married to ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler, who had checked herself into a psychiatric hospital around the same time.
Mulaney legally separated from Tendler in May 2021 after six years of marriage, filed for divorce that July, and finalized the divorce in January 2022. Munn's previous relationships included Tucker Roberts, Aaron Rodgers, Joel Kinnaman, and Chris Pine.
Professional Commitments Continue
Professionally, Munn will soon reprise her role as Samantha 'Sam' Levitt, Jon Hamm's onscreen lover, in the 10-episode second season of Jonathan Tropper's drama Your Friends & Neighbors, premiering this Friday on Apple TV+. Meanwhile, Mulaney continues his Mister Whatever Tour throughout the year, with his next scheduled standup performance at FirstOntario Concert Hall in Hamilton, Ontario.
The couple's journey through Munn's cancer diagnosis and treatment has strengthened their bond, demonstrating how humour and partnership can provide crucial support during life's most difficult challenges.
