The Rise of 'Brotox': Men Embrace Cosmetic Tweakments as Taboos Fade

Until recently, cosmetic procedures such as tweakments, plastic surgery, or injectables were predominantly viewed as a domain for women. However, by 2026, a significant shift is underway, with a growing number of men embracing subtle cosmetic treatments. This trend has been dubbed the rise of 'Brotox' by industry insiders, reflecting a broader cultural change in attitudes towards male aesthetics.

Breaking Down Taboos

A recent UK-based study reveals that one in six men has considered dermal filler treatment, and 21% of respondents indicated they are likely to opt for these tweakments in the future. This data underscores a gradual erosion of the taboo surrounding male cosmetic enhancements, which for years were seen as exclusively for women. Experts attribute this shift to two key societal changes: increased concern among men about their appearance due to social media exposure and a rise in male celebrities and influencers openly discussing their treatments.

Dr Barbara Kubicka, founder of ClinicBe, told the Daily Mail that the surge is also driven by the normalisation of procedures within society. She explained, 'Social media and the constant presence of high definition cameras have certainly played a role, but so has a broader change in how men view self-care. Treatments are increasingly seen in the same space as skincare, dental work or hair treatments rather than something dramatic or image driven.'

Surge in Male Clients

Clinics across the UK, Australia, and the United States have reported a notable increase in male clients seeking cosmetic treatments. For instance, the medical aesthetic clinic group Thérapie Clinic recently disclosed a 38% rise in new male cosmetic injections clients. Nicky Ruebsamen RGN, head of injectable growth, highlighted common requests from men, including softening frown lines, reducing crow’s feet, and enhancing jawline definition. She noted, 'A contributing factor to this surge is that we are living in an era of constant visibility. Video calls, social media and dating apps have heightened awareness of facial expressions and skin quality.'

Clinicians observe that appearance-conscious young men often seek a more chiselled jawline, while older men are becoming less content with ageing naturally and are exploring ways to turn back the clock. Popular options include botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers, which are used to create a 'masculinisation effect', such as slimming or defining the jawline. Botox relaxes facial muscles to smooth lines, and when injected into the masseter muscle, it can make the jaw appear slimmer. Fillers add volume to define the chin and jowl area, enhancing jawline definition.

Celebrity Influence and Openness

Celebrities are playing a pivotal role in normalising male cosmetic treatments. Dr Nora Jaafar explained that those under constant camera scrutiny, such as male celebrities, are leading the charge to look more youthful. She said, 'It’s a fast way to sharpen the face and look more refreshed almost immediately. Male celebrities may opt for it because it quickly restores or enhances mid-face structure, which can soften with age or weight fluctuations.'

High-profile figures like Rylan Clark and Bobby Norris have openly shared their experiences with cosmetic procedures. Rylan recently showcased the results of a facial procedure on Instagram, describing it as 'traumatic and invasive', while Bobby Norris displayed his swollen face after a face and neck lift. Other celebrities, including Gordon Ramsay, George Clooney, and Joe Jonas, have publicly discussed their treatments, helping to break down stigmas. Joe Jonas candidly remarked, 'There’s a lot of stigma around injectables. I have a lot of guy friends who have gotten treatments done, but they will be hush about it.'

Ongoing Challenges and Future Trends

Despite progress, challenges remain. Simon Cowell admitted to overdoing fillers, warning that excessive procedures can lead to unnatural results. Dr Jamie Aphlett emphasised that while perceptions are shifting, more awareness is needed to make men feel comfortable seeking treatments without judgement. He stated, 'The outdated perception that aesthetic treatments are only for women is gradually shifting, but more awareness is needed to make men feel comfortable seeking treatments without judgement.'

Looking ahead, as social media continues to highlight male self-care and aesthetics, experts predict a further increase in men embracing injectables as part of their grooming routines. This trend is likely to sustain the growth of 'Brotox' and similar cosmetic enhancements among men.
