Mel Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023 after a scan revealed a tumour measuring 5 centimetres, which she affectionately nicknamed "Terry." The tumour was successfully removed through surgery, and initially, she was given the all-clear, providing a glimmer of hope.
Cancer Metastasis to Lungs
However, in late February 2024, during a routine scan, small nodules were discovered in her lungs. This indicated that the cancer had metastasised, dramatically altering her prognosis and treatment path. Over the subsequent two years, while continuing her work on MAFS, Schilling underwent sixteen rounds of chemotherapy in an effort to combat the disease.
Clinical Trial and Further Complications
Following chemotherapy, she was informed that she qualified for a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her specific gene type, scheduled to commence in March 2026. This news reignited her optimism about potentially overcoming the illness. Tragically, over the Christmas period, Schilling began experiencing severe symptoms, including blinding headaches and numbness on her right side.

After undergoing numerous tests, she received the crushing news that the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite undergoing subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team has now conveyed that there is nothing further they can do medically. In her own words, Schilling expressed, "Hearing those words changes everything."

In her statement, Schilling reflected on her current condition, noting, "My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love."
