Mark Webster Returns to Premier League Darts After Cancer Battle
Mark Webster Returns to Premier League Darts After Cancer

Sky Sports presenter and darts pundit Mark Webster is set to make his return to Premier League Darts coverage after a health battle with a rare form of cancer. The Welshman has been absent from television screens since February, when he stepped back from his broadcasting duties to undergo intensive treatment for hairy cell leukaemia.

Why Was Mark Webster Absent?

Webster, 42, was diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia in early January. This rare blood cancer causes the bone marrow to produce an excess of abnormal white blood cells. In the period leading up to his diagnosis, Webster reported feeling "really fatigued." Following medical advice, he began chemotherapy and stepped away from live broadcasts to protect his compromised immune system from the high-pressure environment of arenas.

Recovery and Return Announcement

In a candid interview released in early May, Webster admitted that his recovery had encountered several setbacks regarding his blood counts. He noted that his progress was not as swift as anticipated, which initially created uncertainty about his return. However, on Tuesday, 12 May, Webster confirmed via social media that doctors had cleared him to return to the commentary box. He wrote on X: "Although I'm still undergoing treatment, I have been cleared to return to Premier League duty on Thursday."

Positive Outlook Despite Diagnosis

Despite the severity of his condition, Webster has remained optimistic. He reassured fans, stating: "It sounds bad when you say leukaemia but... It’s got a good prognosis, 95 per cent of cases are successful." His positive attitude has been a source of encouragement for many.

Webster's Decorated Career

Before transitioning to broadcasting, Webster—nicknamed 'The Spider'—won the 2008 BDO World Championship. He later moved to the PDC, where he famously defeated Phil Taylor to reach the 2011 World Championship semi-finals. As a pundit, he is highly regarded for his technical analysis, breaking down the mechanics of a player's throw, and has become a vital part of the Sky Sports team.

Emotional Comeback in Birmingham

Webster’s return will take place this Thursday night at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham. He will join the Sky Sports team for Premier League Darts coverage starting at 7pm, just as the race for the play-offs reaches a critical and intense stage.
