The Princess of Wales has demonstrated what body language experts describe as her 'unique royal superpower' during an emotional visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she received her cancer treatment. In January 2025, Kate visited the hospital to personally thank staff and revealed that her cancer is now in remission.
During the visit, Kate was seen hugging patients sharing similar experiences. Body language expert Judi James commented that these hugs showed 'acute empathy' and a capacity for 'authentic connection'. James noted that Kate's own cancer journey has added an extra layer to her ability to listen and understand.
Kate met four cancer patients and shared stories with them. She joked about entering through the front door for a change, having made 'so many quiet visits'. She empathised with one patient undergoing chemotherapy, saying, 'It's really tough. It's such a shock.' She also advised on the importance of staying positive and keeping warm during treatment.
The princess asked patients about their treatment details, trials, and wellbeing, and inquired after their families. She shook her head sympathetically upon hearing difficult accounts of long treatment. Speaking of the importance of self-care, she said, 'I really felt like I needed to get the sun. You need loads of water and loads of sunlight.'
Kate also spoke to doctors and nurses about care and research, and discussed the challenges of receiving a diagnosis. She highlighted the importance of continuity in clinical and home settings, and noted that recovery extends beyond treatment, with long-term side effects that can be challenging.
