The Princess of Wales made an unexpected appearance alongside Prince William during a visit to Charing Cross Hospital, where they expressed gratitude to NHS staff for their dedication throughout the challenging winter period. Prince William had been scheduled to attend alone for his first official duty since the festive season, but in an eleventh-hour adjustment, he was accompanied by the Princess, who marks her 44th birthday tomorrow.
During the visit, Kate spoke with volunteers who support chemotherapy patients. Maureen Gilmour, 86, a three-year volunteer on the chemotherapy ward, remarked that patients often spend “hours” at the hospital. Kate, whose cancer is now in remission, responded: “I know,” before placing her hand on William’s arm and adding: “We know.”
The couple later participated in an impromptu tea gathering for volunteers and staff. As they entered, volunteers exclaimed “wow”. Glancing at his watch with humour, William queried: “Can we still say that?” The tea party room received funding from Imperial Health Charity, of which Kate and William are patrons, and the visit was designed to showcase the essential work of NHS Charities Together.
They also joined neuro-rehabilitation activities with patients, including therapy and arts sessions accompanied by a harpist. Speaking with a patient, Kate remarked: “You need the medical support, but actually being able to have the sort of holistic support alongside it must help the days go past.” She highlighted the importance of creativity and nature in her own recovery journey.
Later, during a discussion on NHS philanthropy, William referenced his wife’s “health journey”, saying: “Both of us have had different experiences with hospital, me working in the air ambulance, Catherine with her recent health journey, and coming here today reminds us just how important all the teams are.”
