Influencer's Facial Reconstruction Journey Interrupted by Breast Augmentation Surgery
A Brazilian social media influencer, who suffered severe facial disfigurement after receiving fraudulent cosmetic injections, has temporarily paused her reconstruction efforts to undergo breast implant surgery. Juliana Oliveira, known online as Juju do Pix, now 32, continues her complex medical journey following a devastating experience with illegal cosmetic procedures.
The Botched Injection Incident
In 2017, Oliveira received what she believed were silicone-based facial fillers to enhance her feminine appearance. The procedure, administered by an unlicensed clinic without proper consent, involved 21 syringes containing mineral oil and laxatives rather than legitimate cosmetic materials. The injections left her with massively swollen cheeks and eyelids, creating what she described as a "deformed" appearance that significantly impacted her professional opportunities and personal life.
Oliveira, who is transgender, explained she initially sought the fillers to achieve a "more beautiful and feminine" look. Instead, the fraudulent injections created a disfigurement that persisted for years as she struggled to find medical professionals willing to address the complex damage.
Reconstructive Efforts Begin
After an eight-year search, Oliveira finally connected with Dr. Thiago Marra, who performed her first reconstructive surgery in November. The extensive four-hour procedure involved removing the mineral oils and as much damaged skin as possible from her face. Dr. Marra described this as just the initial stage of what will be multiple reconstructive operations.
"I'll be able to empty these a bit more but we can't do this all at once because otherwise necrosis would set in," Dr. Marra explained in a social media video, pointing to Oliveira's swollen cheeks. "In a second stage, once the tissue has recovered more and after we see how her body responds, we will be able to remove even more to further improve the result."
Unexpected Surgical Detour
While still in the recovery phase from her facial reconstruction, Oliveira has now undergone breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Marra shared the results on Instagram late last month, showcasing what he described as a "silicone implant surgery" with promising initial outcomes.
"Everything is progressing perfectly - exactly as expected," Dr. Marra wrote in his post. "Beautiful incision site, healing nicely, and self-esteem through the roof - which is what matters most. Just a reminder: the final result continues to evolve over time... It takes three to six months to see the complete result but one thing is already certain: an incredible transformation is on the way."
Broader Context of Cosmetic Injection Risks
Oliveira's experience highlights significant risks in the cosmetic injection industry. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 people across 11 U.S. states reported harmful reactions between November 2023 and March 2024 after receiving Botox injections from unlicensed or untrained providers.
None of these procedures occurred in proper medical settings, with recipients describing receiving injections in spas and private homes. The affected states included California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, indicating a widespread problem with unregulated cosmetic procedures.
Oliveira's case serves as a stark warning about the dangers of seeking cosmetic treatments from unlicensed providers, while her ongoing surgical journey demonstrates the complex, multi-stage process required to address such medical complications.
