Martha Plimpton, best known for her role as Stef in the 1985 film The Goonies, has opened up about being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at the age of 50. The actress, now 54, described the diagnosis as a 'huge relief' that helped make sense of her life.
Speaking at the premiere of her HBO mini-series Task, Plimpton said: 'I'm actually a late diagnosis ADHD, like millions of others. It was actually a huge relief to be diagnosed. So many little things fell into place and made sense that hadn't made sense before.' She added that she is 'not ashamed' and feels 'finally free'.
According to the NHS, ADHD is a condition where the brain works differently to most people, often causing difficulties with concentration and sitting still. The condition is more commonly recognised in men, as women with ADHD often exhibit inattentive symptoms that can be harder to spot.
Plimpton proudly wore a diamond necklace spelling out 'ADHD' at the event. The actress has had a varied career since The Goonies, earning critical praise for her role in the television series Raising Hope and appearing in shows such as The Good Wife and Younger. She is also a vocal advocate for reproductive rights and co-founded the organisation A Is For.
