Grandmother's Eye Colour Change Uncovers Life-Threatening Illness
Sarah Williams, a 53-year-old grandmother from South Benfleet, experienced a harrowing medical journey after her eyes began to change colour, ultimately revealing a devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Initially suffering from constipation in January 2025, Sarah was consistently advised by her GP to use laxatives, with no further investigation into her symptoms.
Critical Observation Leads to Emergency Care
On February 17, 2025, while caring for her grandchildren, Sarah's friend, Elizabeth Cattrall, noticed that her eyes had turned a distinct yellow hue. Alarmed by this change, Sarah dialled 111 and was instructed to visit Southend University Hospital immediately. There, she underwent blood tests and a CT scan, which provided the first clues to her serious condition.
The following day, Sarah received the shocking news that she had pancreatic cancer. She was quickly referred for a Whipple procedure at Royal London Hospital to remove the tumour and 20 nearby lymph nodes. Although the surgery initially appeared successful, Sarah faced severe complications when internal stitches ruptured, causing intense pain and necessitating a second operation.
Ongoing Treatment and Setbacks
After recovering from surgery, Sarah began a course of 12 chemotherapy sessions. However, after just six treatments, she developed a 10cm liver abscess, which doctors had to drain. Further scans later revealed that the cancer had metastasised to her lungs, liver, and pancreatic bed, forcing her to prepare for a resumption of chemotherapy.
Sarah shared her emotional response to the diagnosis, stating, "When I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the nurse said I had three options. I could go home with no treatment, have the operation, or just treat the cancer with chemotherapy. We were all shocked; my husband and I burst into tears, and he phoned our children to tell them the news."
Challenges with Healthcare System
Throughout her ordeal, Sarah encountered significant delays and challenges within the NHS. After a PET scan in January 2026 indicated inflammation in her liver, she claims the NHS proposed waiting until April for further investigation. Concerned by this delay, Sarah sought a private second opinion, where CT scans and blood tests confirmed the cancer's spread.
Due to extensive NHS waiting lists for the required treatment, Sarah is now privately funding her chemotherapy. Her sister, Nikki, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs, which has garnered overwhelming support from former colleagues, old school friends, and the wider community.
Sarah expressed her gratitude, saying, "The amount of support and messages I have received is overwhelming. So many people have contributed; it's overwhelming. We want to express our gratitude to everyone who has donated to help me."
