A large emergency services presence was reported in Atherton on Monday afternoon after police responded to a concern for the welfare of a man. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to an address on George Street at around 3pm on 23 October.
A cordon was put in place covering George Street, off Mealhouse Lane, as well as Rosedale Avenue and Water Street. Officers from the tactical aid unit (TAU), paramedics, and fire crews were at the scene. It is understood a police negotiator was deployed, though there was no threat to the wider public.
One resident said she was 'stuck' inside her bungalow with officers not allowing her outside her gates. A 42-year-old resident on Alma Street said he found police had blocked off all surrounding streets when he returned home from work at 5.30pm. Another resident, who has lived in the area for 40 years, noted that police have attended the blocks of flats 'quite a bit lately' but described the scale of the response as 'massive'.
GMP confirmed that no arrests had been made. The emergency services left the scene around 7pm. A spokesperson said: 'At approximately 3pm today, officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a male at an address on George Street in Atherton. A cordon has been put in place whilst officers respond. No arrests have been made.'
