The Eight Sleep Pod 5 is a hi-tech mattress topper with a bedside hub that circulates temperature-controlled water (heated or cooled) through built-in tubes within the cover. It also has sensors that measure heart rate, sleep stages, respiratory rate and even snoring, and can gently buzz you awake with vibrations that become increasingly vigorous if ignored.
Set-up and features
The set-up is extremely smooth: all you do is slip the cover on, plug the Pod in and refill the water tank a couple of times. An idiot-proof app is used to control the Pod. “Autopilot” software learns from your body metrics to optimise temperature and recommend the best time to go to bed.
The Eight Sleep Pod 5 core has a temperature range of 12C to 43C, with both sides independently controlled. The Hub is 40 x 40 x 15 cm and the cover comes in double, king, super king or emperor sizes.
Sleeping on it during a heatwave
Slipping into a bed that has been pre-cooled on a hot day is a surreal delight. It feels like an icy breeze has blown over your sheets. Dual controls mean that each side of the bed can be adjusted separately, which is great if you and your bedfellow have different temperature preferences.
Reviewer Jessica Burrell said: “Mine and I certainly do, but we’ve both slept considerably better since. It’s not cheap, and you have to buy membership (from £199 per year), which is annoying. But in all honesty, this pod could save marriages.”
