As summer approaches and Britons fire up their barbecues, medical professionals have issued a warning against a common cleaning tool. Doctors are urging the public to avoid using metal wire grill brushes, citing serious health risks from tiny wire fragments that can break off and contaminate food.
Dr Mike, a social media doctor, shared advice from paediatric emergency doctor Dr Beachgem, who highlighted a specific incident that led her to permanently stop using the brushes. She explained that if swallowed, wire bristles can become lodged anywhere from the lips to the intestines, causing severe problems.
Patients have required medical attention after wires became stuck in their tonsils and intestines. Dr Mike noted that patients may not connect their symptoms to a swallowed bristle, complicating diagnosis for doctors when they present with stomach pain or nausea.
Safer alternatives include traditional sponges like Scrub Daddy or chainmail grill brushes, which provide effective cleaning without the risk of wire fragments breaking off. Allowing the grate to soak before scrubbing also helps remove residue.
