British Mother Regains Consciousness After Meningitis Ordeal in Tenerife
A British mother who was fighting for her life in a Spanish hospital after suddenly falling ill at Tenerife airport has now woken from a coma, according to a heartfelt family update posted on a fundraising page.
Sudden Illness at Airport Leads to Critical Condition
Jade Bird, a 33-year-old carer from Abergele in North Wales, was preparing to fly home from Tenerife last Wednesday when she became severely unwell at the airport terminal. In distressing scenes witnessed by her loved ones, she was rushed from the airport to a local hospital, where medical professionals discovered a serious brain infection that had rapidly progressed into meningitis.
Jade was immediately placed into an induced coma to stabilise her condition, with her sister-in-law Victoria travelling to Spain to be at her bedside. Victoria explained the terrifying sequence of events: "She flew out to Tenerife with her boyfriend for a holiday. While they were there, she was complaining of earache, then she started being sick."
Medical Crisis and Family Anguish
"When they got to the airport, she was unable to communicate and she was screaming in pain, so they took her to the hospital," Victoria continued. "When they got there, they did a CT scan and found she had an infection on her brain, so they transferred her to an ICU in the north of Tenerife, put her on a ventilator, and she's been there ever since."
The medical team subsequently confirmed that the infection had developed into meningitis, with Jade being heavily sedated for several days. There were significant concerns about potential complications including seizures, epilepsy, memory loss, and paralysis. The full extent of any lasting effects remains unknown until Jade fully recovers consciousness and undergoes comprehensive neurological assessment.
Positive Development Amid Ongoing Challenges
In a recent update on the GoFundMe page established to support Jade's medical needs, her relatives confirmed that she has begun to regain consciousness and is "much more alert and aware of her surroundings." Despite this encouraging progress, Jade remains hospitalised in Tenerife, with her family facing a daunting £46,000 quotation for a medical evacuation back to Britain.
This substantial cost has been presented despite the family's insistence that Jade has appropriate travel insurance coverage, according to reports from The Manchester Evening News. Jade, who has a young daughter named Skyla, will be transferred to a specialised neurological ward for thorough assessment once stable enough to move.
Family's Emotional and Financial Struggle
Medical staff have indicated that Jade will need to continue receiving intravenous antibiotics before being medically cleared to travel home. Victoria expressed the family's emotional and practical difficulties: "Myself and her mum flew out the following morning after we found out. At some point, me and her mum are going to get to a stage where we can't afford to stay here, but how do we go home?"
"The communication just isn't there - there's a language barrier and we only get updates once a day," she added. "It's not something we can even comprehend right now."
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
The family established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of Jade's medical evacuation and ongoing care, which has so far raised more than £12,000 through public donations. Victoria acknowledged the emotional toll of the situation: "It's been really stressful. It's been absolutely heart-breaking telling her daughter that she's unable to see mummy because she's in the hospital. We struggle every day and we just hope every day when we walk in to see her that she's a bit more alert."
While acknowledging they have "a long road ahead" in terms of Jade's recovery and eventual return to Britain, the family expressed profound gratitude for the public's generosity and support. They stated: "We're overwhelmed with all the kindness. People have been so thoughtful and everybody has pulled together to raise money to get Jade home and we don't think that any words will ever thank them enough."
The family remains determined to do whatever is necessary to ensure Jade's safe return to the United Kingdom, where she can continue her recovery surrounded by loved ones and familiar medical support systems.
