British Mother Discharged After Life-Threatening Meningitis Ordeal in Tenerife
A significant development has emerged in the case of a British mother who was hospitalised with meningitis while on holiday in Tenerife. Jade Bird, a 33-year-old carer from Abergele, has now been discharged and has safely returned to the United Kingdom after a harrowing health crisis that left her fighting for her life.
Sudden Illness Strikes During Holiday Departure
Jade Bird was preparing to fly home from Spain earlier this month when she suddenly became unwell. According to family accounts, she initially complained of earache before experiencing severe sickness. This rapid deterioration prompted an emergency hospital admission in Tenerife, where medical professionals diagnosed her with meningitis, a serious infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
The situation escalated quickly, with Jade being placed into an induced coma to stabilise her condition. Her family immediately travelled to Spain to be at her bedside, facing weeks of uncertainty as she battled the illness in intensive care.
Positive Update as Recovery Progresses
After several weeks of treatment, Jade's condition improved sufficiently for discharge. She was released from hospital on Thursday and flew home to Britain on the same day. A family friend provided an encouraging update, stating: "She is now back in the UK, doing well, stable, and is currently being assessed in a hospital closer to home as she continues her recovery."
Jade has expressed profound gratitude for the medical care she received and the support that enabled her family to be with her during the crisis. She specifically thanked Tenerife Hospital for saving her life and acknowledged the overwhelming support from well-wishers.
Community Support and Charitable Donations
The family's ordeal was supported by a GoFundMe campaign that raised sufficient funds to cover travel expenses for relatives flying to Spain and to assist with Jade's recovery period away from work. Jade has announced that this fundraising page has now been closed, but she is encouraging continued donations to a charitable cause close to her heart.
She explained: "The money has enabled my family to get endless flights, stay at my bedside for weeks and will help me stay off work to recover properly and spend time with my girl until I'm better. It's also allowed us to donate to a very good cause called Tommy's Story."
Tommy is a five-year-old boy from Sale, the same age as Jade's daughter Skyla, who is undergoing palliative chemotherapy while seeking treatment in America. Jade hopes to raise awareness for his needs through the "Tommy's Journey - fighting cancer for a third time" campaign.
Emotional Reflections and Future Outlook
In her heartfelt statement, Jade reflected on her near-death experience and the importance of family support. "I'm so lucky to be alive, and I'm so grateful to everyone. I will never forget this. Every day I still wake up with overwhelming love and support," she shared.
She added emotionally: "You truly are amazing people, and I will forever be grateful, grateful to Tenerife Hospital for saving my life, grateful to you all for enabling my family to be there, and so very thankful that my daughter still has a mum."
Jade is now reunited with her young daughter Skyla as she continues her recovery journey closer to home, with medical assessments ongoing to monitor her progress following the serious infection.
