BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell was forced to miss his breakfast show on Tuesday after suffering a kidney stone attack. The 57-year-old was admitted to Salford Royal Hospital on Monday evening after feeling unwell.
His co-host Rachel Burden presented the programme alongside stand-in Chris Warburton. Burden told listeners she had been in contact with Campbell while he was in hospital and that he was recovering well.
Kidney stones are hard lumps formed from waste products in the blood that crystallise in the kidneys. They are common, affecting about three in 20 men and up to two in 20 women, typically between the ages of 30 and 60.
While small stones may pass painlessly, larger ones can block the urinary tract, causing severe pain. Campbell's absence highlights the sudden nature of such health issues.
