BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson has spoken emotionally about the moment his wife Charlie Gilbert was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, leading to a poignant wedding ceremony. The 58-year-old farmer and TV personality revealed that tests in 2021 uncovered a 4.5cm tumour on Charlie's pancreas, prompting the couple to reassess their priorities.
After 28 years together, Charlie proposed, and they married the day before her surgery. 'We cried a lot,' Adam said. 'Those vows cemented my emotions and let me say from the heart how I feel about Charlie.' The registrar noted she had never seen such an emotional couple. For them, it was a way of saying goodbye to everyone.
Charlie wore an ivory dress and walked in with her mother, while Adam gave a speech at the reception. 'It was a horrible position to put everyone in because you're trying to be happy, but I was going into hospital the next day and didn't know if I'd be coming out,' Charlie said. 'It was the best possible last day I could have had.'
The surgery took place the following day, with Charlie spending three days in intensive care and a week recovering in hospital before being allowed home. Two years on, she is back to work part-time and lives from one six-monthly scan to the next. Adam reflected: 'Friends and family are even more important to us now. In the past, I'd push the children to be more career-focused. But now I'm kind of "Just have a lovely time, because you just don't know what's around the corner."'
