Former BBC and ITV presenter Michael Barrymore, 78, is recovering at his new home in South Devon after undergoing hernia surgery in London on 18 March. The entertainer relocated to the Kingsbridge area three weeks ago and has praised the warm welcome from locals.
In a health update shared with his 4.3 million TikTok followers on Saturday, Barrymore said he is taking it easy and took his dog Lara to Blackpool Sands in Devon. He joked that the Devon beach is “way better” than its namesake in Lancashire and treated himself to a sausage bap from a beachside kiosk.
Barrymore described Devon as “absolutely gorgeous” with “blue skies all day long”. He is overseeing renovations on his new home and recently received an aluminium framed print, which he said looks great when the sun hits it. “My house is slowly starting to take shape now,” he added.
The star admitted he has been sleeping a lot during his recovery and has painkillers from the hospital but dislikes taking them because they make him drowsy. He confessed he “couldn’t be bothered to cook” and opted for a microwaved Thai green curry ready meal followed by rhubarb pie and custard.
Days earlier, upon coming round from his operation, Barrymore joked: “Okay the surgery was a success, but what if I’m not funny anymore?” A Devon local offered to help with housekeeping and dog walking, while another follower asked about recovery time, to which Barrymore replied: “A couple of weeks I think.”
