Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has delivered the latest fitness updates on Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, and Ben White as the Gunners prepare to face Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Monday. With Manchester City's midweek victory over Crystal Palace piling on the pressure, Arteta is hoping for positive news from the treatment room.
Ben White Ruled Out for Season
Ben White, who was forced off against West Ham, has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the campaign due to a knee injury. Both the club and Arteta have confirmed that the England international will not feature against Burnley, Crystal Palace, or in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. However, surgery is not required, and his recovery timeline remains uncertain.
Riccardo Calafiori a Doubt
Riccardo Calafiori was substituted at half-time against West Ham after 'feeling something,' as Arteta described. The Italian defender's availability for the Burnley match is in question. Arteta stated: 'We don't know whether he's going to be available now. We still have days ahead. Hopefully, it's nothing serious, but we'll have to wait and see how he reacts.' A potential return could come against Crystal Palace on May 24.
Jurrien Timber Progressing
Jurrien Timber, sidelined for two months, is making strides in his recovery. Arteta provided an encouraging update: 'He wanted to be very close to the team. He's progressed a little bit in the last few days. He's feeling better. We're going to try to get him available as quick as possible.' The Dutchman could also be in contention for the Palace fixture.
Mikel Merino's Uncertain Return
Mikel Merino continues his rehabilitation from foot surgery undergone in February. Arteta admitted: 'No chance for the weekend... I don't know if he will return before the end of the season. There's still a fair bit to do, so everything has to be smooth and quick if they want to have a chance to play any minutes.'
Arsenal's title hopes remain alive despite City's win. Victory over Burnley, combined with City dropping points against Bournemouth, would see Arsenal crowned champions. With the Champions League final on the horizon, Arteta will be keen to have his key players fit for the run-in.
